From Mary: Having just looked at a church website I found to be totally inspiring (Old South Church, UCC, Boston, MA), I say let’s leap in and start getting something on line.  I know Michelle is increasingly frustrated with Facebook, and I hope our Feb. 25 retreat will give us a clearer sense of who we are and what we’re offering.

That’s the one.  It’s a big, urban church, all that we’re not, but their writing is amazing, how they articulate what they’re about is inspiring, and, of course, they’ve got all sorts of musicians, techies, and artists, not to mention theologically-literate sorts to draw from.  I confess I’m a little envious, but I’m sure there are problems and challenges they’ve got
that I can’t even imagine.  I mentioned their website less as something to copy, and more to say that a good one can be exciting.

QUESTION = DO WE PROTOTYPE THE WEBSITE WITH “GOOGLE BLOGGER” OR “WORDPRESS

All basics can be done in either product – but WORDPRESS is much more flexible

HEADER with rotating images – rotating either on a timed basis or changing just on page load and reload

POSTS and PAGES maybe with features such as expand/collapse text and tabbed text

SIDEBAR with content based on which post(s) or pages(s) are being displayed

INTERACTION would be thru commenting on blog posts or referral to our FACEBOOK page

QUESTION = WHAT MENU STRUCTURE/NAMES?  — WHAT CONTENT?

Churches use varying names for the four specific aspects of all church websties

REACHING UP worshiping God

REACHING IN fellowship with other church members

REACHING OUT working to serve the community at large

REACHING DOWN the church elders providing instruction

for example

http://gracenewcanaan.com
uses – explore, connect, listen, grow

QIESTION = HOW SHOULD THE SAINT IRENAEUS QUOTE AFFECT THE DESIGN AND CONTENT OF THE WEBSITE?

Do we want the structure and content of the website to illustrate what SECOND CONGREGATIONAL is doing to implement or practice the Saint Irenaeus quote?

It is common to just use the first sentence of the quote

GLORIA DEI VIVENS HOMO
the glory of God is a human being fully alive!

Though some think the meaning is in the second sentence of the full quote

The Glory of God is Humanity fully alive.
But the life of a human being is the vision of God.
Gloria Dei, vivens homo.
Vita autem hominis, visio Dei.

QUESTION = WHICH STYLE OF ROTATING IMAGE IS PREFERRED?

Images may be changed on timed-intervals or just on page-load and page-refresh.

Images may be single (page width) or several images side-by-side – and the latter may be faded into each other.

A good example is

http://www.cdmucc.org/
where image background to church logo, on home page changes on timed basis between the images that appear and stay fixed on other pages based on content
